Open-end coding
Assigning themes to free-text survey answers or transcripts so they can be counted and compared.
Open-end coding used to be done by hand, slowly and expensively, which is why most surveys had few open questions. Language models now code open-ends in minutes. That changes how a questionnaire gets designed, because you can afford to ask why.
Coding quality depends on the codeframe. Insights engineers version their codeframes and check the model's assignments against a sample.
