An insights engineer is a consumer insights professional who builds the system that answers a research question, instead of answering it again next month. They start from a decision the business has to make, build on work the team already does by hand, and keep score in hours given back and decisions changed.

The title follows a pattern. When software reached sales, sales got the go-to-market engineer. When it reached solutions architects, they became forward-deployed engineers. Analysts who wrote SQL became analytics engineers. Consumer insights gets the insights engineer.

What the job looks like

  • They start from a decision, not a brief. They can name the decision, who makes it, and what would change their mind before anyone opens a dataset.
  • They start with the work already on the desk. The first project is the deck the team rebuilds by hand every week. Time it, rebuild it, show the hours back.
  • They build it the second time. The first time a question is asked they answer it. The second time they build the thing that answers it.
  • They send the recommendation with the finding. No chart arrives with the "so what" saved for the meeting.
  • They sit with the business. Inside product, marketing and customer teams, in the room where the decision gets made.

Decision

They start from a decision, not a brief

Before anyone opens a dataset, they can name the decision, who makes it, and what would change their mind. A question with no decision behind it waits.

Skills

Research design. Enough SQL to join two tables. AI tools used daily, with a clear idea of where they fail. Prompts written the way a researcher writes a discussion guide. The ability to turn a pattern into a recommendation someone will fund. And the step the insights function always skipped: checking whether the decision moved.

Who takes the job

Mostly not data scientists. They come from strategy consulting and from inside insights teams. They already know how to frame a problem and brief a chief marketing officer. What they add is a habit: when they do something twice, they build it.

Frequently asked questions

What is an insights engineer?
An insights engineer is a consumer insights professional who builds the system that answers a research question, instead of answering it again next month. They start from a decision the business has to make, build on work the team already does by hand, and keep score in hours given back and decisions changed.
How is an insights engineer different from an insights analyst or insights manager?
An insights analyst or manager runs studies: brief, vendor, fieldwork, deck. An insights engineer starts from the decision, not the study, and the output is a system that answers the recurring question before anyone asks it.
How is an insights engineer different from an analytics engineer?
Analytics engineers model behavioural and transactional data, usually in SQL, for dashboards. Insights engineers work on why people do what they do: attitudes, motivations, interviews and surveys, often with AI doing the moderation and the first pass of analysis. Same habit, different subject.
Is an insights engineer a data scientist?
No. Most come from strategy consulting or from inside insights teams. They need enough SQL to join two tables and a working command of AI tools, but the core skill is framing the right question and getting the answer to the person who can act on it.
What skills does an insights engineer need?
Research design. Basic SQL. AI tools used daily, with a clear idea of where they fail. Prompts written like discussion guides. The ability to turn a pattern into a recommendation someone will fund. And the step the insights function always skipped: checking whether the decision moved.
What tools does an insights engineer use?
AI-moderated interview platforms, synthetic respondent tools, a qualitative repository, a survey platform, SQL and a notebook, and a language model with a house style prompt. The tools change every quarter. The habit of building it the second time does not.
Who hires insights engineers?
Brands with in-house insights teams that want answers every week rather than every six weeks, and consumer intelligence firms that place insights engineers inside client product, marketing and customer teams.
Does AI replace insights professionals?
No. AI takes the transcription, the coding, the summary and the first draft of the deck. That was never the valuable part. What is left is bigger, because one person can now do it every week.
